Nearly Half of Companies Lose Up to 4% of Revenue Due to Supply Chain Disruption https://sphera.com/company/news/half-of-companies-lose-revenue-due-to-supply-chain-disruption/ Tue, 12 May 2026 11:59:14 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=44649

Sphera research shows financial impact is driven by delayed decisions and hidden upstream exposure

CHICAGO, IL – (May 12, 2026) Supply chain disruption is now a recurring driver of financial loss, with nearly half of organizations losing up to 4% of annual revenue, according to new research from Sphera®.

The study, based on a survey of 200 Chief Operating Officers (COOs) and Chief Financial Officers (CFOs), found that 44.5% of organizations experienced annual revenue losses of 3–4% due to disruption over the past three years, with an average annual loss of 2.4%.

But the research reveals the issue is not a lack of visibility. It is a failure to act in time.

Organizations take an average of 8.7 hours to detect disruption and more than 40 hours to understand its impact — creating a multi-day delay between risk emerging and effective response. During this window, disruption escalates and financial loss compounds.

“Disruption is no longer the exception—it is a constant,” said Paul Marushka, CEO and president of Sphera. “What recent events have made clear is that risk is both hidden and overwhelming. Organizations are dealing with more signals than ever, but they still can’t identify or prioritize what actually matters. This isn’t a visibility problem—it’s an insight and timing problem. The gap between signal and action is where revenue is lost.”

Despite rising awareness, organizations remain exposed. 100% of executives surveyed report concern about potential supply chain disruption linked to instability in the Strait of Hormuz, with 36% “very concerned.”

Yet this awareness is not translating into faster decisions or coordinated action.

The research also highlights a structural blind spot across supply chains. While most organizations monitor Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers, only 12% have visibility into Tier 3 and beyond — where disruption often originates. These hidden upstream dependencies, combined with delayed response, create systemic exposure that is difficult to detect and harder to manage in real time.

From Signals to Decisions, Actions, and Outcomes

To address these challenges, Sphera today announced new Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) capabilities designed to transform how organizations identify, prioritize, and respond to risk.

Sphera’s platform:

  • Reveals hidden dependencies across components, materials, and supply paths
  • Connects risk signals directly to products and business impact
  • Draws on exclusive proprietary datasets supporting confident, defensible decisions
  • Sphera AI turns complex data into clear, real-time risk insight
  • Filters noise to surface the risks that matter most
  • Enables faster, coordinated response through AI-driven workflows

By connecting insight, decision-making, and execution into a single system, organizations can reduce response times, mitigate disruption impact, and strengthen supply chain resilience.

Award reinforces Sphera’s leadership in chemical lifecycle management across the Department of War and NASA

CHICAGO, IL – (March 12, 2026) Spheratoday announced the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has awarded Sphera a five-year, sole-source contract to deliver and sustain the Hazardous Materials Management System (HMMS) in support of the Department of War (DoW) and associated federal agencies.

This award follows Sphera’s recent announcement that HMMS would be deployed across the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) operations and serve as the agency-wide standard for hazardous material management.

Under the contract, Sphera will deliver, sustain and modernize the HMMS suite — strengthening chemical lifecycle management, improving data integrity, and enhancing enterprise visibility across the U.S. federal government’s defense and aerospace operations worldwide.

“This award is a testament to the trust our customers place in Sphera and our ability to deliver mission-critical solutions with precision and accountability,” said Paul Marushka, CEO and president of Sphera. “Our expertise in chemical lifecycle management and regulatory intelligence enables us to support some of the most demanding operational environments in the world. We are proud to continue partnering with the DLA to advance modernization, strengthen compliance and enhance operational resilience.”

The five-year performance period lays a solid foundation for continued innovation, including enhanced analytics and alignment with evolving cloud and security standards. Under the DLA, this contract vehicle is open to both DoW and non-DoW agencies to leverage.

The award reflects the U.S. federal government’s confidence in Sphera’s technology, domain expertise and past performance managing mission-critical hazardous materials programs that underpin readiness, compliance, logistics and environmental stewardship across complex operational environments.

Sphera Research: Regulatory Pressure Is Outpacing Scope 3 Readiness in 2026 https://sphera.com/company/news/regulatory-pressure-is-outpacing-scope-3-readiness-in-2026/ Thu, 05 Feb 2026 12:55:44 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=41437

Sphera’s Scope 3 report reveals even well-prepared teams feel they are behind on Scope 3 reporting requirements in the face of increasing complexity

CHICAGO, IL – February 5, 2026   – Sphera today released its 2026 Scope 3 Report, finding that companies are entering a new phase of sustainability reporting—one defined by execution, not intention. In 2026, the bar has moved decisively from “measure what you can” to “prove comprehensive, defensible coverage.” Yet readiness remains uneven: 45% of business leaders report having only limited confidence in the accuracy of their Scope 3 emissions data.

“Companies have long struggled to source reliable Scope 3 data, but what was once an operational challenge has now become a material compliance risk,” said Paul Marushka, CEO and president of Sphera. “With mandatory disclosures taking effect and global frameworks proliferating, the margin for error is shrinking. Our research shows organizations recognize this reality and are moving quickly to expand their Scope 3 reporting.”

To understand how organizations are navigating the regulatory pressures in flux across the globe,  Sphera surveyed 1,034 sustainability leaders operating in 15 different industries across EMEA, APAC and the Americas. Their responses provide year-over-year benchmarks and a direct view into the operational realities shaping today’s reporting environment.

Why 2026 is different: Regulatory deadlines are forcing Scope 3 reporting to scale

Reporting on Scope 3 emissions is more difficult for companies than ever. It requires gathering, estimating and calculating factors they don’t directly control.

Nevertheless, the report reveals organizations have made progress in recent years:

  • 59% say sustainability budgets have increased
  • Voluntary Scope 3 disclosure has risen to 73%, up from 49% in Sphera’s 2024 report, signaling transparency efforts that go beyond baseline compliance
  • 80% say recent regulatory changes have accelerated sustainability reporting
  • 75% say regulations have accelerated Scope 3 reporting

And yet the data lift remains heavy.

Even prepared teams are struggling to keep pace

Sphera’s data reveals that, while organizations want to keep up with accelerating reporting demands on their own terms, even prepared teams still feel they are behind. 89% are planning to expand Scope 3 reporting in the future, but much of the data needed to calculate Scope 3 emissions is scattered across spreadsheets, supplier portals, ERP systems, product databases and logistics systems. Companies are looking to invest in Al to help accelerate, but data quality remains a concern. The challenges that pervade Scope 3 data collection in general can limit the effectiveness of AI: 47% plan to apply Al to supply chain risk assessment, but 45% worry about data quality.

Investing in processes that keep AI outputs traceable and auditable, like automated checks that flag anomalies and human review that confirms what the data is really saying, is posed to allow businesses to process data more efficiently, focusing on the most important Scope 3 data categories.

Organizations want to invest and move faster. This requires a new playbook that meets the pace of regulatory change, reduces risk, advances sustainability commitments and strengthens customer and investor trust while grounding decisions in reliable, auditable data.

Scope 3 reporting remains a core part of businesses’ sustainability strategies. As global regulations continue to evolve, Scope 3 reporting is more important than ever. Sphera’s third annual Scope 3 survey data presents a clear path forward: move from planning to action, and from compliance to a model of sustainability that’s embedded into decision-making at every level of the organization.

Sphera Finds a “Confidence Paradox” in Latest Supply Chain Risk Report as Supplier Financial, Sustainability and Quality Pressures Intensify https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-finds-a-confidence-paradox-in-supply-chain-risk/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 13:55:43 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=41179

CHICAGO, IL (January 22, 2026)Sphera today published its 2026 Supply Chain Risk Report, revealing a growing confidence paradox in supply chain risk management: organizations report near-universal confidence in their data, visibility and regulatory reporting—while disruption, loss and supplier-level risk continue to rise.

The report draws on Sphera’s proprietary supply chain risk intelligence, alongside structured survey data from 800 Chief Procurement Officers and Chief Supply Chain Officers across the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Canada, collected quarterly throughout 2025.

Together, the findings show leaders operating under continuous board and CFO scrutiny, expressing high assurance in their risk intelligence, yet simultaneously experiencing frequent disruption and acknowledging structural weaknesses in supplier data, engagement and upstream visibility.

Confidence is high. Outcomes are lagging.

Across the surveys, 98–100% of respondents say they are confident in the completeness and timeliness of supplier risk data, their ability to detect supplier financial distress early, and the accuracy of sustainability and compliance reporting. Yet 73% report financial or operational losses due to supply chain disruptions in the past 12 months, with the average organization experiencing 3.48 material disruptions.

“This is not a lack of intent or awareness,” the report notes. “It is a confidence paradox: high assurance in outputs such as dashboards and reports, alongside acknowledged fragility in the data foundations that feed them.”

“Leaders are confident in their reporting and early-warning capabilities, yet disruption and loss remain routine,” says Paul Marushka, CEO and president of Sphera. “Resolving that paradox means shifting the focus from confidence to proof — making sure risk decisions are grounded in verifiable data and can stand up to sustained board scrutiny.”

Incident data shows pressure concentrating, not easing

Sphera’s incident monitoring data reinforces that the external risk environment is not stabilizing evenly:

  • Supplier viability risk remains the largest category by volume for the third consecutive year and continues to rise, increasing by approximately 10.3% in 2025 versus 2024, following 5.8% growth the year before. A sharp Q3 2025 spike of ~20% year-on-year highlights accelerating late-year financial stress among suppliers.
  • Delivery risk has eased since 2023 and stabilized in 2025, but remains operationally volatile quarter to quarter.
  • Image & Compliance (Sustainability and Regulatory) risk is increasing, with a pronounced Q3 2025 surge of ~28%, aligning with reporting and regulatory cycles.
  • Quality & Performance risk, while smaller in absolute volume, is the fastest-growing category, rising by nearly 60% year-on-year in 2025, with increases across every quarter.

These patterns suggest risk is becoming more concentrated and interconnected, clustering around financially strained suppliers where quality failures and sustainability and regulatory issues increasingly emerge together.

Governance scrutiny exposes the paradox

The surveys show that supply chain risk decisions are now routinely challenged at the highest levels:

  • 48.5% of organizations say supplier or supply chain risk decisions are challenged weekly or monthly by boards, CFOs or senior executives.
  • A further 46.5% report challenges quarterly.

Under this cadence, confidence alone is no longer sufficient. Decisions must be defensible, traceable and evidence-based—with a clear chain from signal to action.

Why resilience gains have plateaued

Most organizations report having already implemented traditional resilience measures, including supplier diversification, near-shoring, inventory buffers, expanded monitoring tools and widespread AI adoption. Yet disruption persists because foundational constraints remain unresolved: limited supplier cooperation; inconsistent Tier-2+ data quality; fragmented systems; and slow pre-decision risk assessment cycles.

The 2026 implication

The report concludes that the defining challenge for 2026 is not adding more tools, but resolving the confidence paradox by strengthening foundations: verifiable N-tier visibility; scalable supplier engagement; validated data integrity and decision-ready evidence that stands up under board scrutiny. Without that shift, confidence will remain high on paper—while disruption and loss remain a normal operating condition.

Sphera Partners With Rolls-Royce Power Systems on Environmental Product Declarations https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-partners-with-rolls-royce-power-systems/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 12:55:27 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=41083

Collaboration delivers verified EPDs to support procurement and regulatory reporting

CHICAGO, IL (January 13, 2026)Sphera®, a leading provider of integrated sustainability and operational risk management software, data and consulting services, has partnered with the Rolls-Royce Power Systems division on mtu generator Environmental Product Declarations (EPD).

Following the ISO 14025 and EN 50693 standards, EPD reports present third-party verified information about a product’s impact on the environment over its entire life cycle, from raw material extraction and manufacturing to use and end-of-life. The EPD report includes a summary of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study results and environmental impact data.

Sphera’s Sustainability Consultants created two EPDs on behalf of Rolls-Royce using Sphera’s LCA For Experts and LCA BOM Import. As a result of the collaboration, Rolls-Royce became one of the first engine original equipment manufacturers (OEM) to publish EPDs on the International EPD® System (Environdec), covering two high-performance mtu generator sets: the mtu 16V 4000 DS2500 and mtu 10V 1600 DS500. These EPDs set a new industry standard for environmental transparency in the power generation sector.

“With these environmental product declarations, we set a new industry standard for environmental transparency in the field of energy systems,” explained Tobias Ostermaier, President Stationary Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems division. “This is our response to growing demand from our customers, and we are actively supporting them in reducing their carbon footprint.”

Sphera’s Chief Services Officer Mark Stach added: “The published EPDs are testament to the ongoing partnership between Rolls-Royce and Sphera. They exemplify how companies are embedding sustainability into the fabric of their operations – from procurement to leadership.”

Sphera Recognized in the 2025 Smart Innovators: Life Cycle Assessment Software Report https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-recognized-in-the-2025-smart-innovators-life-cycle-assessment-software-report/ Tue, 02 Dec 2025 12:00:43 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=40500

In the independent analyst report, Sphera was identified as having market leading capabilities for analytics, forecasting and hotspot identification

CHICAGO, IL (December 3, 2025) – Sphera®, a leading provider of integrated sustainability and operational risk management software, data and consulting services, has been recognized in the Smart Innovators: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Software report by independent analyst firm Verdantix.

The report offers an innovation benchmark of 13 LCA software providers, focusing on data collection and management, environmental impact assessment, calculation, modelling and performance analysis and reporting. Verdantix recognized Sphera for its market-leading capabilities and differentiated strength in analytics, hotspot identification and forecasting. Sphera also scored strong functionality across six additional categories.

Sphera scored market-leading functionality with differentiated offering – the highest score available – for the following capabilities:

  • Internal and external reporting
  • Analytics, hotspot identification and forecasting.

Sphera was also commended by Verdantix for strong functionality in:

  • External data integration and exchange
  • Data quality control and validation
  • Impact assessment and calculation
  • Product, system and supply chain modelling.

“This recognition validates Sphera’s leadership in delivering the reliable data and analytical depth and rigor that LCAs demand,” said Paul Marushka, CEO and president of Sphera. “Our software, supported by more than 20,000 regularly updated datasets, helps organizations pinpoint impacts, improve product design and meet growing expectations for credible sustainability reporting.”

The report states that “amid heightened pressure to reduce product environmental impacts, the use of lifecycle assessment (LCA) software has become increasingly important for sustainability, procurement, product and supply chain professionals. To meet emerging regulations such as the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and capture business value, firms are required to comply with ecodesign rules, shift from estimated to primary supplier data, and provide evidence-based claims such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Conducting LCAs manually is often time- and resource-intensive, but automation through software helps streamline workflows and improve scalability.” – Verdantix, Smart Innovators: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Software, 21 November 2025.

“As organizations work to limit product environmental impacts, sustainability, procurement and supply chain leaders must invest in the right lifecycle assessment tools to succeed,” said Jessie Wilson, Industry Analyst at Verdantix. “The demand for accurate, auditable and near real-time sustainability data has elevated reporting software from a supporting tool to a strategic requirement.”

Sphera Process Safety Report Shows Safety-Related Challenges Continue to Intensify, AI Emerges as a Pivotal Enabler in Addressing Key Challenges https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-process-safety-report-shows-safety-related-challenges-continue-to-intensify/ Tue, 04 Nov 2025 12:55:35 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=39812

In its 10th edition this year, Sphera’s 2025 Process Safety Report reveals process safety must now evolve from visibility to resilience

CHICAGO, Nov. 4, 2025 – A new report by Sphera®, a leading provider of integrated sustainability and operational risk management software, data and consulting services, highlights the challenges companies are facing in 2025, including aging facilities, a less-experienced workforce and rising operational pressures.

Since Sphera first launched the Process Safety Report in 2016, a decade of benchmarking has shown steady technological progress, but limited impact where it matters most: reducing the number of incidents. During this time, the market has seen shifts to cloud-based solutions and away from single-purpose applications towards connected platforms.

The 10th edition of the report, which includes insights gathered from 300 senior process safety professionals across the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, Australia and New Zealand, outlines the strides process safety technology has made in the past decade. Process safety management has matured, with many organizations having reduced their loss-of-containment hazards, and additional growth is expected as more companies prioritize safety.

“Today, the process safety industry stands at a crossroads. Aging infrastructure, workforce attrition and increasing operational complexity are pushing traditional safety solutions to their limits,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “Our newest Process Safety Report shows that leadership in this area is more critical than ever. Leaders must move beyond endorsing safety initiatives to owning them, ensuring that digital systems and AI tools are being carefully embedded to support operational decision-making. Applied with discipline and oversight, AI can provide predictive insight, reduce data overload and play a pivotal role in overcoming these challenges.”

Key takeaways from the report include:

  • Digital adoption is expanding: 64% of the respondents say technology is already helping their business today, 33% see strong future potential. 47% are already using live risk data.
  • AI adoption is accelerating: 42% of the respondents are using or planning to use AI, with 24% improving safety programs and 29% connecting risk data across assets. Yet one in three organizations still lack in-house AI expertise.
  • Third-party partnerships drive maturity: 55% of organizations use third-party solution providers for process safety management. These companies are also more advanced by using AI (52% compared to 29% managing safety in-house) and report greater confidence in risk management.
  • Confidence in major accident hazard exposure is decreasing: The share of organizations who are “very confident” about reducing their exposure dropped from 35% in 2024 to 27% in 2025, while 9% still report no confidence at all.

The report notes that while basic risk assessment software is widespread, systems that can predict major accident hazards, connect data across assets and proactively control risks have not yet been universally adopted. Integrating AI in process safety management is the next frontier. While AI use for standalone process safety management improvements (24%) is growing, connecting risk data across assets — where siloed data has traditionally been a barrier — is a bigger opportunity.

About the Process Safety Survey

Since 2016, the Sphera Process Safety Report has provided a telling snapshot of the state of process safety and operational risk management. The 2025 report presents comprehensive insights gathered from 300 senior process safety professionals across the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand. Sphera Survey: Nearly Three-Quarters of Companies Suffered Revenue Losses from Supplier Disruptions in the Last 12 Months https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-survey-nearly-three-quarters-of-companies-suffered-revenue-losses-from-supplier-disruptions-in-the-last-12-months/ Tue, 14 Oct 2025 11:59:13 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=38977

Most supply chain leaders are considering significant changes to their supply chain practices in response to macroeconomic pressures.

CHICAGO, IL (October 14, 2025) – New research commissioned by Sphera, a leading provider of integrated sustainability and operational risk management software, data and consulting services, reveals that 73% of supply chain leaders experienced supplier disruptions in the past 12 months, and the majority saw those disruptions negatively impact their bottom line. The revenue impact of supply chain risk is a near-universal issue: almost one in four respondents (23%) reported significant revenue or cost losses, and an additional 50% acknowledged minor losses.

“The world is going through a reset in supply chain strategy,” says Paul Marushka, CEO and president at Sphera. “The linear model of stretching supply chains globally to maximize efficiency and lower costs is going away. Trade restrictions, export controls and geopolitical disruption around the world continue to change the game. Firms require an agile, segmented and geographically aligned approach that builds in resilient sourcing strategies concurrently to balance risk.”

The study of 200 chief procurement and chief supply chain officers across the US and UK shows that supply chain disruptions are no longer rare shocks. Instead, they have grown to represent a constant drag on profitability, investor confidence and growth.

Leaders planning bold moves but hitting risk barriers

Almost all supply chain executives (94.5%) say they are likely to shift a critical portion of their supply chain to another region in response to tariffs, regulations and geopolitical pressures. Yet major operational barriers stand in the way, specifically respondents are concerned with:

  • Speed of supplier risk checks – 33%
  • Compliance documentation and audit readiness – 26%
  • Data accuracy in emerging markets – 21.5%
  • Visibility into tier 2–3 suppliers – 16%

The generative AI imperative

Executives see artificial intelligence as a critical lever to close the gap between strategic intent and operational readiness. Survey respondents highlight AI-generated supplier risk summaries as essential for faster operational decisions (31%), faster strategic decisions (29%) and speed and accuracy in under 60 seconds (24%). The respondents are clear on what the board expects in return:

  • Cost savings / cost avoidance – 28%
  • Revenue protection from disruption – 24%
  • Top-line revenue growth – 21%

About the survey
The survey was conducted in September 2025 with 200 senior procurement and supply chain executives (CPOs and CSCOs) across the US and UK. Respondents represented organizations with more than 25 employees across industries including manufacturing, retail, transport and utilities.

Sphera Launches Supplier 360 Intelligence, Empowering Supply Chain Leaders to Map Out Risk with Proprietary AI https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-launches-supplier-360-intelligence/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 12:54:44 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=38852

AI-fueled supplier risk summary shows multiple layers of risk in seconds

CHICAGO, IL (October 9, 2025) –As the world continues to navigate a new era of supply chain volatility, the volume, velocity and variety of risks are accelerating. This means businesses with complex, multi-tier supplier networks need to make faster, well-informed decisions to protect revenue, mitigate risk and secure growth.

Amidst this backdrop, Sphera, a leading provider of integrated sustainability and operational risk management software, data and consulting services, today launched Supplier 360 Intelligence, a new supply chain risk intelligence AI tool built specifically for procurement and risk leaders.

Sphera delivers the most actionable AI-generated supplier risk summaries, powered by fine-tuned generative AI models, weighted risk scoring and proprietary supplier intelligence, enabling procurement and supply chain leaders to see risks clearly in under 60 seconds, prioritize critical issues and take proactive mitigation steps.

Introducing Supplier 360 Intelligence

Sphera’sSupplier 360 Intelligence capability delivers actionable AI-generated supplier risk summaries. In under 60 seconds, procurement and supply chain leaders can see risk, anticipate disruption and protect revenue with AI-driven supplier summaries and proactive recommendations, powered by up to 400 monitored risk indicators.

Naved Siddique, chief product officer at Sphera, said: “With Supplier 360 Intelligence, we’ve built a generative AI-powered capability that delivers defensible risk intelligence in under a minute, giving procurement and supply chain teams the clarity they need to proactively mitigate risk and make faster, smarter decisions that stop revenue leakage and control costs.”

Without visibility across all tiers of the supply chain, supply chain volatility increases resulting in a significant impediment to revenue growth. Investing in proactive risk-monitoring technology like Sphera’s Supplier 360 Intelligence empowers procurement leaders to fully manage and control risk across their supply chains, instead of constantly assessing risk across individual alerts as they arise.

In addition to the Customer Award, Sphera was also recognized with an Industry Award in the category of Rapid Time to Value at a separate Workday Rising event on Monday, September 15, further underscoring the company’s leadership and innovation in the sustainability and risk management space.

Sphera and Evonik Launch TÜV-Certified Automated Life Cycle Assessments up to Ten Times Faster Than Traditional Methods https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-and-life-cycle-assessments/ Wed, 10 Sep 2025 11:00:51 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=37621

Evonik’s TÜV-certified process, powered by Sphera software, accelerates transparency and reliability in sustainability life cycle assessments for the chemical industry

CHICAGO, IL, September 10, 2025 – Sphera, a leading provider of sustainability and operational risk management software, has partnered with Evonik, one of the world’s leading chemicals companies, to launch the first TÜV-certified process for automated life cycle assessments (LCAs) in the chemical industry. Traditionally, LCAs, which analyze the environmental impact of a product from raw materials to disposal, have been slow and complex. Sphera’s software is key in enabling Evonik to generate them up to ten times faster than traditional manual methods, with enhanced accuracy and reliability.

This breakthrough comes at a time when regulations such as the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) are driving the demand for transparent, verifiable sustainability data. Life cycle assessments are one of the most recognized methods for producing the credible, product-level insights these frameworks demand. By automating the process with Sphera, Evonik can now deliver TÜV-certified data on everything from carbon emissions and water use to nutrient discharges, helping the company stay ahead of regulatory expectations while supporting customers in achieving their own sustainability goals.

“The chemical industry sits at the heart of a range of value chains, with progress on sustainability in the sector especially critical,” says Naved Siddique, chief product officer at Sphera. “Automating life cycle assessments empowers companies to embed trusted environmental data directly into strategic and operational decisions. The shift from sustainability as a reporting exercise to it driving innovation as a competitive advantage will define the industry’s future.”

Now, powered by Sphera’s advanced software, Evonik can deliver rapid, TÜV-certified sustainability insights. LCAs that once took weeks can now be delivered within days, enabling greater agility and responsiveness. Evonik has already implemented automated LCAs for over 1,000 products, with plans to expand across all business lines by 2027.

Evonik’s TÜV-certified process also increases the reliability and integrity of environmental impact data. Certification is based on well-established manual methods that have now been digitized, reinforcing trust in the transition to automated sustainability assessments.

Automated LCAs are driving internal change. They support informed decision-making on raw material and energy use and help evaluate CO₂ reduction measures from both environmental and economic perspectives.

The partnership between Sphera and Evonik demonstrates how scalable, flexible digital solutions can enhance transparency at every stage of the value chain. All environmental indicators can be evaluated at the push of a button, with data sourced from central company systems or trusted external providers.

“Our customers don’t just want to know how sustainable a product is today, they want to see how it can improve tomorrow. That’s exactly what we deliver with our new solution,” says Florian Böss, Head of Life Cycle Management at Evonik.

By integrating Sphera’s automated LCA solution in its existing IT landscape, Evonik has signaled a clear commitment to further advancing sustainability practices. Together, the two companies are setting a benchmark that could resonate far beyond the chemical sector.

New Sphera Report Reveals Geopolitical Risk as Top Supply Chain Concern https://sphera.com/company/news/new-sphera-report-reveals-geopolitical-risk-as-top-supply-chain-concern/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 19:22:57 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=35396

Global survey finds nearly all supply chain leaders rank geopolitical instability as a leading threat to business continuity and operational resilience

CHICAGO, IL, June 30, 2025 – A new study by Sphera, a leading provider of integrated sustainability and process safety software, data and consulting services, reveals procurement and supply chain leaders are focused on safeguarding supply chain resilience, with pre-empting political risk paramount for firms looking to stay ahead of volatility.

The research identifies geopolitical risk as the most pressing concern among respondents, underscoring that supply chains are increasingly entangled with global political dynamics.

The report, which surveyed over 200 Chief Procurement Officers and Chief Supply Chain Officers across the US, UK, Germany and Canada, shows that concern prevails among supply chain leaders about geopolitical, economic, and financial risks, underscoring a collective vigilance about the ripple effects of global uncertainty. The survey reveals that beyond macroeconomic and geopolitical challenges, supply chains are being reshaped by supplier dynamics and the use of emerging technologies. Where some organizations are doubling down on nearshoring or diversifying their supplier base, others are prioritizing risk monitoring tools, financial hedging strategies, and deeper supplier collaboration.

“Business cannot afford to underestimate the impact of geopolitical disruptions on supply chains,” said Naved Siddique, chief product officer at Sphera. “Organizations prepared to be decisive can mitigate the effects of global political developments on supply chains through investing in supply chain transparency and using emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence.”

Highlights from the research include:

  • Geopolitical risk: 95% of CPOs express concern, with 64% “very concerned” about tariffs, trade wars, armed conflict, and sanctions.
  • Regulatory uncertainty: 91% of CPOs and 88.5% of CSCOs singled out regulatory uncertainty, including evolving sustainability reporting standards, as a significant concern. Nearly half of CPOs (48.5%) are “very concerned”, reflecting how rapidly evolving compliance expectations are challenging supply chain teams to stay agile.
  • Supplier Financial Health: 88% of respondents expressed concern about the financial health of their suppliers. Four in 10 supply chain leaders were “very concerned”, with an additional almost 5 in 10 “somewhat concerned”, meaning that supplier solvency is a risk being actively tracked for 9 in 10 leaders.

These findings confirm that the new collaboration between Sphera and risk intelligence company Verisk Maplecroft comes at the right time for organisations looking to build resilience to an increasingly uncertain global risk landscape. Sphera’s clients can now access dozens of Verisk Maplecroft’s political, human rights and environmental risk indices, providing them with unrivalled, data-led insight into the key risks affecting their operations and supply chains.

The future of supply chains is being shaped by unprecedented uncertainties, from shifting trade policies to raw material shortages. Businesses that embrace agility, intelligence, and resilience will not only survive future disruptions but thrive in a world where proactive supply chain tracking is no longer an option, but a necessity.

Sphera Recognized for Environment, Health and Safety Software in Verdantix’ Smart Innovators: Contractor Safety 2025 Report https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-recognized-for-environment-health-and-safety-software-in-verdantix-smart-innovators-contractor-safety-2025-report/ Mon, 02 Jun 2025 11:00:03 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=34618

In the independent analyst report, Sphera achieved market leading functionality, showcasing industry-leading software solutions

CHICAGO, IL (June 2, 2025) – Sphera, a leader in sustainability and operational risk management software, has been commended for its capabilities in Environment, Health and Safety software in the 2025 Smart Innovators: Contractor Safety Management report by independent analyst firm Verdantix.

Sphera earned recognition for its market-leading functionality and comprehensive capabilities, showcasing strong functionality that set it apart. This accolade recognizes Sphera’s dedication to providing industry-leading solutions, further strengthening its reputation as a leader in promoting EHS excellence and offering contractor safety management solutions.

“We are honored to be recognized for our data-driven but people-centric approach to enterprise health and safety,” said Naved Siddique, chief product officer of Sphera. “Optimizing the flow of relevant safety information simplifies effective risk management, enabling teams and firms to continue ‘business as usual’ no matter the volatility. As organizations face a plethora of external pressures in 2025, contractor management is about more than hiring qualified workers. It’s about ensuring they are equipped for safe and productive on-site work, preventing safety breaches and project delays, and safeguard their contractor teams and reputations.”

The report includes participants from the 2025 EHS Software Green Quadrant and features vendors that were commended for contractor safety management. The Verdantix Green Quadrant report assessed five key contractor safety management capabilities: contractor pre-qualification and onboarding, contractor control of work, contractor safety training, on-site contractor safety management and contractor site access control.

In the report, Verdantix notes that research on the construction sector by the UK Health and Safety Executive confirms the view that contractors contribute to a higher number of safety incidents for a hiring firm compared with full-time employees. This has spurred businesses to commit to improving contractor safety.

Sphera’s own Health and Safety Pulse report also underscores the critical role of contractor safety as 33% of organizations report contractors constituting 20% of their workforce, with only 7% reporting no contractors. Key initiatives include involving contractors in safety programs through near-miss reporting (64%), incident reporting (63%), safety audits (58%), and safety metrics inclusion (54%), highlighting the necessity of comprehensive contractor safety management solutions in today’s evolving workforce landscape.

“The contractor management software market is expected to grow by a CAGR of 12.5% to reach over $4.1 billion by 2028. The last few years have seen it become increasingly crowded, competitive and complex, with an abundance of software covering most aspects of contractor safety management,” said Moses Makin, Industry Analyst at Verdantix. “With significant risks contracting out work entails, safety management is an integral part of contractor and risk management. Investing in the latest technological solutions enables firms to mitigate their contractor and other operational risks by digitizing contractor safety management processes.”

Sphera’s 2025 Scope 3 Report Reveals Sustainability Progress Despite Persistent Data Challenges https://sphera.com/company/news/spheras-2025-scope-3-report-reveals-sustainability-progress-despite-persistent-data-challenges/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 12:00:28 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=33886

New findings show companies remain committed to corporate sustainability reporting with increased demand for transparency from investors and customers

Chicago, IL – April 29th, 2025 – A new report from Sphera, a leading provider of integrated sustainability and operational risk management software, data, and consulting services, reveals a 27% increase in companies reporting on Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions in 2025, with 79% now disclosing across all three scopes. The 2025 Scope 3 Report examines how organizations worldwide are addressing emissions data challenges and advancing supplier collaboration to meet evolving sustainability goals.

The 2025 Scope 3 Report shows companies are responding to increased demand for transparency from investors and customers and are guided by their risk management priorities and long-term sustainability goals, even as regulatory requirements evolve in key regions. Despite this momentum, 62% of organizations currently reporting on Scope 3 cite internal data quality as a major barrier, while 79% say supplier data availability remains a top challenge in achieving accurate Scope 3 disclosures.

“The findings in this year’s Scope 3 Report highlight the tension between sustainability reporting ambition and operational reality,” said Paul Marushka, CEO and President of Sphera. “Despite changing regulations, most companies understand that Scope 3 emissions management is a strategic necessity. Sustainability is fast becoming an extension of business best practices, with suppliers no longer merely competing on price and quality, but also on sustainability. Firms should strive to incorporate sustainability requirements like Scope 3 emissions reporting into their core business operations, investing in robust data infrastructure and deepening supplier engagement to meet both market expectations and long-term sustainability goals.”

Shift from spend-based to hybrid data models

As reporting efforts evolve, companies are increasingly moving away from spend-based estimations. Only 15% of respondents now rely solely on spend-based methods, down from 30% in 2024. At the same time, use of hybrid data models has jumped 17 points, with 65% of companies now combining spend-based, activity-based, and supplier-specific data to improve accuracy.

Supplier engagement is increasing

Supplier transparency is critical to value chain emissions reporting. The report shows that 54% of companies are requesting emissions data directly from suppliers, and nearly one-third (29%) are asking those suppliers to set their own reduction targets, signaling a shift toward deeper collaboration and shared climate accountability.

Reporting maturity varies by region but Scope 3 is growing in prominence

European companies continue to lead Scope 3 reporting, supported by established regulatory frameworks and cultural commitment to sustainability. However, North American and Asian companies are showing significant momentum. Globally, 47% of currently non-reporting firms plan to begin disclosing Scope 3 emissions within two years, marking a worldwide shift towards Scope 3 reporting.

Key findings also include:

  • 87% of companies who currently report on emissions do so voluntarily: The majority of surveyed organizations continue to disclose emissions data proactively, demonstrating a commitment to transparency despite relaxed reporting requirements.
  • 85% of companies report Scope 3 emissions including Category 1, consisting of purchased goods and services: This reflects growing alignment between emissions tracking and procurement functions.
  • 57% of the respondents who are currently reporting on Scope 3 using supplier-specific data indicated supplier data collection is a top challenge. Mature reporters still struggle with supplier participation, accuracy and consistency.

Amid rising global supply chain risks, Sphera study highlights urgent need for enhanced N-Tier supply chain transparency https://sphera.com/company/news/amid-rising-global-supply-chain-risks-sphera-study-highlights-urgent-need-for-enhanced-n-tier-supply-chain-transparency/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 14:53:11 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=33762

Survey Reveals Most Chief Procurement Officers Struggle with Supplier Data Sharing Across their Supply Chain

CHICAGO, IL, April 24, 2025 In an era marked by escalating geopolitical tensions, evolving regulatory demands and persistent supply chain disruptions, a new study by Sphera, a leading provider of integrated sustainability, operational risk management software, data and consulting services, underscores the critical necessity for organizations to achieve comprehensive N-Tier supply chain transparency. The research reveals the majority of chief procurement officers (CPOs) will struggle to manage supply chain resiliency in this new era of tariff uncertainty.

Sphera’s survey of CPOs and Chief Supply Chain Officers shows that for most CPOs, cooperation within the supply network usually ends at Tier 1 suppliers, because many Tier 1 suppliers prefer not to disclose their supplier relationships. This means that companies do not have end-to-end visibility into their supply chain, limiting their ability to preempt supplier failures like bankruptcy or insolvency, or respond to supply chain vulnerabilities in time to keep operations on track. With 85% of risk and critical incidents occurring in Tier 2-4 suppliers, N-Tier solutions are becoming a strategic and operational imperative.

“When disruptions hit, businesses need options,” said Paul Marushka, CEO and president of Sphera. “Firms with limited visibility into their supply chain have risks and exposures stemming from sub-tier suppliers who may be vulnerable to disruptions. Sphera’s N-Tier survey results demonstrate the importance of comprehensive supply chain mapping. Companies with a proactive approach can successfully weather the storm of any supply chain disruption.”

Highlights from the report include:

  • Data quality challenges: 70% of organizations report difficulties with data accuracy and quality from Tier 2 to Tier 4 suppliers, hindering effective risk management.
  • Regulatory drivers: Nearly half of the organizations surveyed report that their adoption of N-Tier transparency practices is driven by considerations other than regulatory requirements such as CSDDD and EUDR, meaning the respondents believe N-Tier visibility is valued beyond the regulatory level.
  • Manual processes persist: Despite technological advancements, 26% of respondents continue to rely on manual risk assessments, leaving them vulnerable to oversight and inefficiencies. Most of the remaining respondents rely on a range of tools that are not fit-for-purpose, creating additional complexity.

With geopolitical, environmental and regulatory challenges placing pressure on the supply chain landscape, businesses are seeking greater transparency from suppliers at every level. Persistent disruptions mean that companies need to invest in innovative technologies to improve their resilience in the face of an unpredictable future.

This Earth Day, New Book Sustainable Success: How Businesses Win as a Force for Good Challenges Business Leaders to Make Sustainability a Strategic Imperative https://sphera.com/company/news/this-earth-day-new-book-sustainable-success-how-businesses-win-as-a-force-for-good-challenges-business-leaders-to-make-sustainability-a-strategic-imperative/ Tue, 22 Apr 2025 10:39:22 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=33729

Written by Sphera CEO Paul Marushka, the Book Makes the Case for Sustainability as a Catalyst for Long-Term Value, Resilience and Profitability

CHICAGO, IL, April 22, 2025 – As sustainability takes center stage this Earth Day,  Sustainable Success: How Businesses Win as a Force for Good arrives as a timely and thought-provoking guide for business leaders navigating today’s rapidly evolving economic and regulatory landscape. The book is now available for purchase at most online booksellers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop, Rivertowns Books and Better World Books

Authored by Paul Marushka, CEO and founder of Sphera and a recognized leader in sustainability, the book delivers a powerful thesis: when embedded strategically, sustainability is not a constraint—it’s a growth engine for long-term value, resilience and competitive advantage.

“In a world marked with change, sustainability is no longer a nice-to-have—it’s a strategic necessity,” said Marushka. “Businesses that embed sustainability into the fabric of their operations—from procurement to leadership—won’t just weather volatility; they’ll lead the way in building a more resilient, profitable and responsible future.”

Sustainable strategy drives long-term success

In today’s volatile market landscape–where geopolitical tensions, workforce instability and extreme weather events routinely disrupt global operations–Marushka urges companies to move beyond one-dimensional sustainability reporting. He advocates for Enterprise Sustainability Management (ESM) as a holistic framework for embedding sustainability into the DNA of business operations.

Drawing from decades of industry leadership, Sustainable Success outlines how companies can align stakeholder expectations, operational agility and innovation pipelines to unlock lasting value. Marushka’s “Cycle of Good” framework empowers leaders to anticipate cultural shifts, innovate ahead of regulations and translate purpose into performance—building organizations that don’t just survive, but lead.

Why the Stakes Are Higher Than Ever

Recent data reinforces the urgency and relevance of Marushka’s message—sustainability isn’t just a principle, it’s a powerful driver of consumer behavior, strategic investment and executive focus:

  • Consumers demanding it83% of consumers consider sustainability a key factor in their buying decisions and potential policy changes do not impact this cultural trend.
  • Leaders investing in it87% of business leaders view sustainability as a strategic investment that safeguards their organization’s future.
  • CEOs prioritizing it92% of CEOs recognize sustainability’s critical role in long-term performance and see it as key to staying competitive.

Praise for Sustainable Success

Sustainable Success has earned early praise from key industry reviewers and business leaders:

    • Kirkus Reviews calls it “a comprehensive program for embracing environmental sustainability . . . engagingly example-driven.”
    • Publishers Weekly BookLife notes: “Filled with practical takeaways, interactive quizzes, and insights on how corporations succeed at sustainability . . . Innovative thinkers and business leaders will find Marushka’s ideas informative, energizing, and inspiring.”
    • David Batchelor, former vice chairman at Marsh, notes: “An essential read for anyone wanting to learn more about sustainability and how to think about it in both a pragmatic and strategic way.”
    • Hari Osofsky, Professor of Law at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, notes: “This book provides important insights into practical strategies – grounded in examples of success – for simultaneously benefiting businesses and advancing sustainability.”

Sustainable Success: How Businesses Win as a Force for Good is now available for purchase on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other leading booksellers.

Sphera Launches Supplier PCF Calculator to Enhance Accuracy and Transparency in Sustainability Reporting https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-launches-supplier-pcf-calculator-to-enhance-accuracy-and-transparency-in-sustainability-reporting/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 21:02:10 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=33592

New Solution Extends Sphera’s Compliance Capabilities, Enabling Advanced Scope 3 Reporting Through Integration with Proprietary Managed LCA Content Database

CHICAGO, IL, April 14, 2025 – Amid growing regulatory pressure to address carbon emissions, Sphera—a global leader in integrated sustainability and operational risk management software, data, and consulting services—today announced the launch of its Supplier Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Calculator. This innovative solution is designed to help organizations enhance the accuracy of their Scope 3 emissions tracking and strengthen compliance with evolving regulatory requirements.

“Until now, procurement and sustainability leaders have lacked the tools needed to accurately collect and manage sustainability data across complex supply chains,” said Paul Marushka, CEO and president of Sphera. “By harnessing the power of our Managed LCA Content database, the Supplier PCF Calculator enables organizations to integrate high-quality LCA data for enhanced supply chain transparency, foster cross-functional collaboration, and take a more proactive approach to supplier engagement. Our goal is not only to improve the quality of Scope 3 emissions data, but to accelerate sustainability initiatives across the entire value chain and enterprise.”

Evolving global regulations still require compliance

As global regulations continue to evolve—including the Omnibus Directive in Europe and California’s SB 253—businesses are under increasing pressure to collect accurate Scope 3 emissions data, particularly for Scope 3 Category 1 reporting. Rather than delaying progress in anticipation of regulatory clarity, it is essential for organizations to remain proactive and integrate sustainability into their core strategies. The need for timely, high-quality emissions data is only growing, and Sphera’s Supplier PCF Calculator is designed to address this critical gap with precision and scalability.

With Scope 3 emissions often accounting for more than 70% of a company’s total carbon footprint, the demand for greater transparency across the value chain is intensifying. While many organizations have made strides in managing Scope 1 and 2 emissions, Scope 3 remains a challenge due to its heavy reliance on supplier data. As spend-based emission factors fall short of Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) standards—often resulting in inaccurate baselines that hinder meaningful year-over-year progress—Sphera’s Supplier PCF Calculator offers a robust alternative. By enabling the use of accurate, product-specific carbon data, the solution supports regulatory compliance, strengthens emissions reporting, and advances organizations’ Net Zero ambitions.

Extending access to the most reliable, industry-driven environmental data into supply chains

Delivered through the SpheraCloud platform, Sphera’s Supplier PCF Calculator utilizes the company’s proprietary Managed LCA Content (MLC) database—one of the most comprehensive and meticulously curated LCA datasets available—providing customers with access to the industry’s most advanced and accurate LCA content. Continuously refined over decades by Sphera’s expert consulting teams, the MLC database ensures unparalleled precision in Scope 3.1 emissions reporting.

By leveraging Sphera’s MLC database—which includes more than 500,000 verified emission factors—the Supplier PCF Calculator ensures consistency across product-level, supplier-level, and corporate emissions reporting. Using the same scientifically vetted emission factors across assessments strengthens alignment between product sustainability performance and overarching corporate sustainability targets. Additionally, the platform enables suppliers to input product-specific data into assessments developed by Sphera’s sustainability experts, enhancing transparency and empowering procurement teams to make data-driven, sustainability-focused decisions.

In contrast to solutions that rely on outdated or generic emission factors, Sphera delivers scientifically rigorous, product-specific emissions data—even in cases where suppliers are unable to provide their own PCF calculations. This integrated approach ensures complete, auditable, and regulation-ready outputs, enabling organizations to take control of Scope 3 emissions and drive credible, large-scale decarbonization across their supply chains.

The Supplier PCF Calculator is built on standardized methodologies aligned with industry-recognized frameworks, including Catena-X, the Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT), and ISO 14067/14044. This alignment ensures methodological consistency, accuracy, and comparability across diverse products and supplier networks.

With the launch of the Supplier PCF Calculator, Sphera offers a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for managing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Backed by expert consulting and robust data, the platform helps organizations unify their sustainability strategies, engage stakeholders effectively, and ensure regulatory compliance. Tailored support and precise emissions tracking further enable companies to advance toward their Net Zero goals with confidence and clarity.

Sphera Launches Industry-Leading N-Tier Solution to Enhance Supply Chain Transparency and Risk Management https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-launches-industry-leading-n-tier-solution-to-enhance-supply-chain-transparency-and-risk-management/ Thu, 03 Apr 2025 12:23:03 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=33069

Tariffs, Fiscal Policies and Geopolitical Tensions Amplify the Urgent Need for N-Tier Supply Chain Transparency

CHICAGO, IL, April 3, 2025 – Sphera, a leading provider of integrated sustainability and operational risk management software, data and consulting services, today announced the launch of its new N-Tier solution within its Supply Chain Transparency product line. This innovative solution addresses critical gaps in supply chain risk management by providing real-time visibility into Tier-N suppliers, enabling organizations to proactively mitigate risks before they escalate.

Lack of visibility beyond Tier 1 creates vulnerability

The need for deeper supply chain transparency has never been more pressing. In an environment where widening tariffs, stringent fiscal policies and complex geopolitical dynamics create ongoing disruptions, supply chain leaders are under immense pressure to enhance visibility beyond Tier 1. Without clear insights into upstream suppliers, organizations remain vulnerable to financial instability, regulatory non-compliance and operational disruptions. Soon to be released research from Sphera underscores this urgency, revealing that a majority of chief procurement officers and chief supply chain officers struggle to map their supply chains beyond Tier 1. In fact, 34.8% of organizations cite supplier cooperation as a major hurdle, while 32.4% point to poor data quality as a significant barrier to achieving true N-Tier visibility.

“More than ever before, the lack of upstream visibility is contributing to the uncertainty that supply chain leaders must navigate daily,” said Naved Siddique, chief product officer of Sphera. “Limited visibility into Tier-N suppliers exposes organizations to both operational, regulatory and financial risks. If organizations are unable to map and track suppliers beyond Tier 1, they will remain prone to shocks occurring in the upstream supply network.”

“Traditional N-Tier solutions often fall short, exacerbating confusion rather than providing clarity. Most N-Tier solutions on the market are adding to the complexity rather than solving it, which is why Sphera ensured that our solution is not purely driven by AI, which often inundates users with unintelligible noise stemming from a complex web of tens of thousands of potential sub-tier suppliers, hindering actionable insights,” Siddique added. “Sphera’s N-Tier solution supports corporate objectives to build strategic and holistic resilience across supply networks, empowering organizations to maintain control over supplier selection and monitor risk in critical areas of their supply chains.”

Introducing Sphera’s N-Tier solution: a unified approach to supply chain risk management

N-Tier, which is part of Sphera’s wider Supply Chain Transparency solution, delivers a comprehensive, data-driven approach to supply chain risk management by integrating:

  • Artificial Intelligence: Automates risk detection and data aggregation for real-time insights.
  • Human Intelligence: Empowers organizations with an intuitive validation system to accurately map their supplier network.
  • Supplier Intelligence: Facilitates direct engagement and enhanced collaboration with suppliers to improve data accuracy and compliance monitoring through assessments.

Key Benefits of Sphera’s N-Tier Solution

With these capabilities, organizations can anticipate and mitigate risks before they escalate. Sphera’s N-Tier solution enables early risk detection by identifying potential disruptions within the extended supply chain, ensuring proactive risk management. Additionally, it strengthens compliance monitoring, helping companies navigate evolving regulatory and sustainability requirements with confidence.

Beyond compliance, disruption intelligence is another critical advantage. Organizations gain real-time insights into supplier, geopolitical and environmental risks, allowing them to respond quickly to emerging challenges. This, in turn, supports cost avoidance by addressing vulnerabilities before they impact operations. Moreover, the solution enhances alternative supplier visibility, granting businesses access to a global network of suppliers and supporting multi-sourcing strategies that bolster supply chain agility.

A Game-Changer for Resilient, Sustainable Supply Chains

As companies prioritize sustainability and risk resilience, achieving upstream and midstream supply chain visibility has become essential. By equipping organizations with real-time supplier insights, Sphera’s N-Tier solution enables businesses to transition from reactive crisis management to proactive risk mitigation. In an increasingly complex global environment, this capability ensures robust, sustainable and future-proof supply networks.

New Book, Sustainable Success: How Businesses Win as a Force for Good, Demonstrates How to Balance Sustainability and Profitability https://sphera.com/company/news/new-book-sustainable-success-how-businesses-win-as-a-force-for-good-demonstrates-how-to-balance-sustainability-and-profitability/ Tue, 04 Mar 2025 12:01:25 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=32113

The Book, By Sphera CEO Paul Marushka, Provides Key Insights to Help Businesses Lead with Purpose and Drive Long-Term Value as Strategies for Sustainability Continue to Evolve

CHICAGO, IL (March 4, 2025) – Paul Marushka, CEO and founder of Sphera and a recognized leader in the sustainability industry, today announced the upcoming release of his new book, Sustainable Success: How Businesses Win as a Force for Good. This must-read book for CEOs, business leaders and sustainability and risk professionals guides leaders through the complexities of sustainability and operational risk strategies while providing a roadmap for long term business outcomes.

As regulations shift, political landscapes evolve and market dynamics fluctuate, businesses that approach sustainability with a balanced, thoughtful strategy are best positioned for long-term success. Rather than viewing sustainability as a compliance burden or fleeting trend, forward-thinking companies recognize that sustainability matters and plays a large role in driving operational efficiency and building resilience in any economic or regulatory environment. Sustainable Success: How Businesses Win as a Force for Good reinforces that sustainability is a strategic necessity that fuels growth, reduces risk and creates lasting value for all stakeholders.

The book, featuring Paul’s experiences and lessons learned from 20+ years in the sustainability and operational risk industry, also illustrates how the “Cycle of Good” concept enables businesses to become a Force for Good. It provides a clear roadmap for business leaders seeking to balance sustainability and profitability, demonstrating how organizations can enhance corporate reputation and drive long-term business performance by investing in sustainable strategies that go beyond reporting.

“Companies exist at different stages in their sustainability journey. Some are just getting started, others are barely maintaining compliance, but true leaders treat sustainability as a strategic business driver,” said Marushka. “A nuanced, balanced approach to sustainability innovation enables companies to prosper across regional lines, in any market or regulatory environment. In my time as a CEO, I’ve learned that companies that anticipate and respond to cultural and societal shifts position themselves as leaders, but those that lag behind risk obsolescence.”

“This book provides important insights into practical strategies – grounded in examples of success – for simultaneously benefiting businesses and advancing sustainability,” said Hari Osofsky, Dean and Myra and James Bradwell Professor of Law at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law.

David Batchelor, former vice chairman at Marsh, describes the book as “An essential read for anyone wanting to learn more about sustainability and how to think about it in both a pragmatic and strategic way.”

The principles outlined in Sustainable Success: How Businesses Win as a Force for Good align with Sphera’s mission to create a safer, more sustainable and productive world. By adopting a structured and balanced approach to sustainability, companies can drive innovation, attract talent and secure long-term stakeholder trust.

Sustainable Success: How Businesses Win as a Force for Good is available for pre-order on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other leading booksellers. It will be available for purchase on April 22nd

Sphera Research Highlights Increased Financial Instability and Escalating Risks from Disasters Disrupting Supply Chains in 2024 https://sphera.com/company/news/sphera-research-highlights-increased-financial-instability-and-escalating-risks-from-disasters-disrupting-supply-chains-in-2024/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 12:59:06 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=30733

[CHICAGO, IL] — [January 21, 2025] — Sphera, the leading provider of Enterprise Sustainability Management solutions, has unveiled its 2025 Supply Chain Risk Report, offering an in-depth analysis of the most pressing risks and emerging opportunities reshaping global supply chains. As organizations grapple with evolving regulatory landscapes, economic volatility and heightened environmental and social accountability, the report provides procurement, supply chain and sustainability leaders with actionable insights to navigate the complexities ahead.

The report’s findings are drawn from Sphera’s Supply Chain Transparency solution, leveraging its continuous real-time AI monitoring of over 15 billion global data points monthly, combined with the expertise of Sphera’s in-house risk research team.

“As global supply chains grow more interconnected and vulnerable, businesses are increasingly exposed to financial, environmental and operational risks,” said Paul Marushka, CEO and President of Sphera. “The findings from this year’s report highlight the need for real-time insights, predictive analytics and data-driven strategies to ensure resilience. By addressing these risks proactively, companies can transform vulnerabilities into competitive advantages while navigating today’s complex landscape.”

Key findings from the report include:

  • Financial strain intensifies: Early warning indicators of supplier financial strain increased by 11%, with bankruptcy declarations surging 48% and force majeure declarations rising 61%. These trends underscore the need for real-time monitoring and proactive risk mitigation strategies to safeguard operations.
  • Continued global disruptions: Although delivery-related risks declined by 7%, natural hazards and geopolitical tensions continued to cause widespread disruptions, averaging over 14 incidents per year per organization. Resilience planning and adaptive logistics strategies remain critical.
  • Rising quality concerns: Incidents tied to product quality — including recalls and hazardous material risks—increased by 22%, emphasizing the importance of robust quality management frameworks to protect brand trust and operational continuity.
  • Compliance pressures mount: Sustainability emerged as a central focus in supply chain management in 2024, fueled by the rising demand for ethical practices, environmental accountability and stricter global regulations. A 29% increase in human rights-related issues highlighted the urgency for transparent operations and stronger supplier partnerships to address compliance risks and meet global expectations.

The challenges facing supply chains in 2025 are vast, interconnected and evolving.

Financial stress intensifies with increased bankruptcies and force majeure declarations

Financial risk indicators rose by 11% over 2023, with bankruptcy declarations surging 48% year-over-year and force majeure declarations jumping 61%.

The financial fragility of supply chain partners poses a significant risk to operational continuity, requiring businesses to monitor supplier health and take preemptive action to mitigate disruptions.

Firms still faced recurrent disruptions throughout the year. Strikes escalated to a national scale, with walkouts in ports in Australia and the US negatively impacting supply chains. Flash floods alone rose by 60%, with notable disruption across Europe in summer 2024, exacerbating delays and underscoring the growing impacts of climate change on global logistics and supplier operations.

Regulatory pressure on the rise globally

Sustainability risks became more pronounced in 2024, particularly in Europe, as global regulations tightened and stakeholders demanded greater transparency, with compliance requirements increasingly mandating active supplier engagement. Sustainability-related risk indicators rose 6%, with human rights issues seeing the sharpest increase at 29%. Environmental compliance challenges, particularly linked to more stringent regulations, further complicated risk management efforts.

Quality risks add to the complexity

Maintaining product quality continued to challenge organizations, with quality-related incidents rising by 22% in 2024. Supplier site relocations, driven by cost pressures and market dynamics, led to a 54% increase in hazardous material risks and a 19% rise in product recalls.

Such challenges highlight the importance of robust supplier oversight and proactive quality management to mitigate financial, operational and reputational risks.

In the independent analyst report, Sphera stands out by combining a broad range of environmental differentiators within a comprehensive enterprise Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability solution

CHICAGO, IL (January 6, 2025) – Sphera®, the leading provider of Enterprise Sustainability Management (ESM) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, has been named a market leader in the Green Quadrant: EHS Software 2025 report by independent analyst firm Verdantix.

Sphera achieved joint best-in-class scores in business intelligence, contractor safety management, safety management and water and wastewater management, and was commended for differentiated capabilities in air emissions, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, hazardous waste, control of work, safety management, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and sustainability management. The report highlights Sphera’s robust, all-round Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) management capabilities and notes that Sphera has one of the broadest and deepest capabilities of all vendors benchmarked in the study.

Verdantix also emphasizes Sphera’s high scores for chemicals management (2.5/3.0) and EHS compliance and risk management (2.3/3.0). The SpheraCloud First Report portal–a crucial element of both safety and risk management–is described as a “highly intuitive method of entering data.” The SpheraCloud First Report portal enables an entire workforce to accurately report events and observations from any location at any time.

“We are honored to be recognized as a market leader for our comprehensive, data-driven approach to enterprise EHS and sustainability,” said Paul Marushka, CEO and President of Sphera. “As organizations face increasingly complex safety and sustainability regulations in 2025, managing risks from hazardous materials and environmental incidents is more important than ever. Our EHS&S solutions help ensure workplace safety, simplify tasks, streamline content management and drive meaningful change. These platforms also support operational risk data reporting, enabling businesses to manage risks, cut costs and achieve sustainable growth.”

The newest Green Quadrant report also notes that Sphera “has achieved Leader status in several Verdantix software Green Quadrants, such as for supply chain sustainability, carbon management, process safety and sustainability reporting.”

The report recognizes Sphera as a trusted partner for organizations with $1 billion or more in revenue, particularly in industries where EHS is a critical priority, such as chemicals, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals and mining. Verdantix adds that Sphera’s large-scale deployments are facilitated by an advanced implementation partnership network, featuring Accenture, Arcadis and ERM.

The Green Quadrant report seeks to support corporate decision-makers–EHS, procurement, sustainability, risk and operations leaders–in better understanding available software options, designing EHS software selection strategies and accelerating procurement timelines through more reliable vendor sourcing. The analysis encompasses 2.5-hour live product demonstrations with pre- determined scenarios, as well as vendor responses to a 323-point questionnaire covering eight technical, 19 functional and 12 market momentum categories. Based on the proprietary Verdantix Green Quadrant methodology, the report offers an in-depth data-based comparison of the 21 most prominent EHS platform solutions in the market.

Verdantix also conducted interviews with software customers of the assessed vendors. The ongoing consolidation of EHS management platforms, driven by private equity acquisitions, and the development of ESG and sustainability capabilities as well as a refocusing on core EHS buyer priorities are some of the other important trends highlighted in the report.

“In the past two years market developments have been characterized by the continued broadening of solutions, an increasing focus on module interoperability and widespread AI innovation,” said Christopher Sayers, Senior Analyst at Verdantix. “With ever-evolving ESG and sustainability regulations placing a spotlight on the EHS function, EHS functions must be equipped with modern management systems to facilitate high-quality data collection and realize much-needed time savings.”

Sphera received a perfect score for sustainable risk insights and tied for the highest score in risk identification and mitigation. The report highlights Sphera’s strong capabilities in visualization of supply chain relationships and sub-tier supplier risk profiles. Sphera also tied for the highest score in the supply chain sustainability performance and reporting capability categories. In momentum categories, Sphera earned perfect scores for user adoption, partnerships, customer size, supplier size, as well as tying for the high score for vision and strategy.

“We are incredibly proud to be recognized as a market leader for our holistic approach to supply chain transparency and sustainability that provides businesses with the tools and actionable insights needed to understand vulnerabilities in their supply chain and how that affects their sustainability goals,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “With dynamic risk exposure and ever-evolving sustainability and supply chain due diligence regulations, businesses must achieve end-to-end visibility across their supply chain to effectively manage supply chain risk, sustainability and compliance. Having deeper insight into their supply chain enables companies to proactively monitor and mitigate risks, reduce potential costs, gain a competitive edge and strengthen their sustainability impact. A sustainable supply chain is not just a compliance requirement; it’s a strategic imperative that can drive long-term value and resilience.”

The newest Green Quadrant report notes that “Sphera adopts a holistic approach to supply chain ESG risk and performance management.” Sphera is included among vendors noted for having the most advanced supply chain sustainability capabilities. The report points to Sphera’s Supply Chain Transparency solution as providing companies with “visibility into inherent operational and ESG risks, as well as unforeseen risks such as geopolitical and climate-related events.” It also states that large enterprises facing such risks will especially benefit from the incorporation of risk, reporting and performance management into Sphera’s integrated platform.

The Green Quadrant report aims to help organizations better understand the supply chain sustainability software market landscape, which has rapidly evolved over the past few years. The benchmark report, based on the proprietary Verdantix Green Quadrant methodology, assessed 15 vendors on nine capabilities and 10 market momentum categories. The analysis was based on a multi-hour, live brief and product demonstration, as well as vendor responses to a 54-point questionnaire and customer interviews.

“Corporations cannot meet their ESG and sustainability goals without untangling the intricacies of their supply chains,” said Verdantix. “Supply chain sustainability software empowers corporates to address sustainability data challenges in the supply chain, identify exposure to risks and ensure collaboration with suppliers.”

New Report from Sphera Reveals Adoption of Technology to Prevent Major Accident Hazards and Human Factors Are Top Challenges in Process Safety https://sphera.com/company/news/new-report-from-sphera-reveals-adoption-of-technology-to-prevent-major-accident-hazards-and-human-factors-are-top-challenges-in-process-safety/ Wed, 23 Oct 2024 12:46:48 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=27702

Sphera’s 2024 Process Safety Report shows that while senior leadership and compliance are improving process safety, there remains a persistent gap between safety goals and reality

CHICAGO, IL (October 23, 2024) – Despite advances in available technology that bridge the gap between safety intent and achievement, about two-thirds (66%) of companies still cited disparities between process safety goals and reality, which has remained virtually unchanged since the first edition of the Process Safety Report nine years ago.

“The stakes are higher than ever for process safety improvements,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “Our newest Process Safety Report shows that experienced personnel are exiting the industry, aging facilities are increasing the likelihood of something going wrong — such as incidents with facilities, equipment or people — and visibility into potential hazardous incidents continues to be limited for many organizations that have not adopted proven digital capabilities. On the bright side, we have seen increased interest from senior management who appreciate the connections between improved systems, profitability and competitiveness. The reality is that improving process safety performance helps to keep people, assets and the environment safe while also reducing costs for stakeholders.”

Sphera®, the leading provider of Enterprise Sustainability Management (ESM) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, surveyed 300 process safety management (PSM) and operational risk management (ORM) professionals from around the world and in 10 different industries for the 2024 Process Safety Report. The survey explored the state of process safety and operational risk management in some of the most high-hazard industries, from petrochemicals to power utilities.

Senior leadership and compliance are driving forces in process safety
Over time, there has been a material shift in process safety ownership. Compliance obligations and sustainability regulations could be why nearly one-third (32%) of respondents now say senior leadership is driving process safety compared to 29% in 2023. Three-quarters (74%) of respondents agree that regulations have helped improve safety; yet, just over half of respondents (56%) believe that organizations have moved beyond compliance as an obligation. The top drivers for improving safety performance are reducing major accident hazard (MAH) exposure (61%); operational excellence/ process improvement (52%); and regulatory compliance (41%). These top drivers remain the same from last year’s report but the biggest increase from this year is the focus on production uptime (reducing downtime) — now 36%, up from 29% — which is a critical concern for senior leadership.

Process safety improvements still lag behind the technology
Companies have made progress, with respondents noting that digital tools and real-time data are seen as effective with just over half (51%) pointing to the reduced vulnerability to MAHs. Despite these advances, less than one in four organizations (23%) complete all safety-critical maintenance activities on time and on schedule and just one in ten (9%) are confident they are aware of all MAHs. Looking to the future — as plants get older the probability and consequences of incidents become more significant — almost four in ten respondents (39%) are concerned about lack of visibility into operational risk.

Workforce factors highlighted as a top challenge
The survey found that human factors are seen as the top challenge to delivering effective process safety management, with 40% indicating management involvement and 41% indicating competency as top concerns. This is compounded by experienced personnel leaving the workforce with nearly half of respondents (49%) seeing the loss of and lack of experienced workers as the top factor to increase risks.

Respondents represented several global industries, such as Manufacturing, Oil and Gas, Utilities and Energy, Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Mining and Metals, among others.

Sphera’s Newly Integrated Supply Chain Transparency Solution Enables Proactive Risk Management and Mitigation, Streamlined Supplier Engagement and Regulatory Compliance https://sphera.com/company/news/spheras-newly-integrated-supply-chain-transparency-solution-enables-proactive-risk-management-and-mitigation-streamlined-supplier-engagement-and-regulatory-compliance/ Thu, 17 Oct 2024 12:02:16 +0000 https://sphera.com/?p=27167

Through real-time risk monitoring and integrated sustainability and due diligence data, Sphera Supply Chain Transparency helps strengthen every link in the supply chain

CHICAGO, IL (October 17, 2024) – In today’s world where risk exposure in global supply chains is dynamic and regulations related to sustainability and supply chain due diligence are ever-evolving, businesses need tools and actionable insights that enable them to withstand the uncertainties, get ahead of disruption and be compliant.

Supply chains are under closer scrutiny now in many parts of the world as regulations — such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG), Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) — have emerged to hold companies accountable for human rights and environmental impacts within their supply networks. By integrating Supply Chain Sustainability (SCS) and Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) into one platform, Sphera’s Supply Chain Transparency (SCT) product line provides organizations with end-to-end visibility across the entire supply chain to effectively manage supply chain risk, sustainability and regulatory compliance.

“Supply chains have been facing unprecedented volatility with network disruptions resulting from extreme weather events, economic trends, cyber incidents and ESG-related risks,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “Companies are also facing growing pressure to meet global ESG regulations and consumer demands for greater transparency and ethical sourcing practices. A holistic approach to managing risk and sustainability in the supply chain not only enables businesses to address risk before it disrupts operations but also enables enterprises to build resilient supply chains that can adapt faster to evolving situations, withstand impacts and recover quickly.”

The Supply Chain Transparency (SCT) product line from Sphera, the leading provider of Enterprise Sustainability Management (ESM) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, provides procurement, supply chain and sustainability professionals with an innovative solution for mitigating risk and strengthening their supply chain. Having the ability to proactively monitor risk, collect and assess direct supplier data and comply with evolving standards, helps businesses reduce potential costs associated with risk, gain competitive advantage and build transparent, agile supply chains.

Sphera SCRM (formerly riskmethods) leverages AI along with a team of risk research experts to validate and manage information from internal and external data sources to provide real-time risk monitoring. Having an improved risk profile helps companies gain competitive advantage with a well-managed approach to ensure business continuity, protect their reputation and reduce the costs related to supply chain risk. Sphera SCRM issues alerts to users, which provide actionable insights that enable companies to implement countermeasures at the earliest opportunity, proactively monitor the situation to address additional developments and mitigate consequences. Some examples include:

  • In the lead-up to the traffic jam in the Panama Canal — which sees 6% of global maritime trade and 40% of all U.S. container traffic relying on the passageway — the first alert went out in April 2023 when the Panama Canal Authorities imposed restrictions for the first time. Starting August 8, 2023, Sphera SCRM began informing customers about delays on the Panama Canal due to low water levels and continued during the crisis.
  • During a period of historic flooding in Europe, alerts indicated heavy rainfall in the southern parts of Europe as early as September 5, 2024, and a total of 115 alerts were issued to users as the flooding progressed and included impacts such as power outages and product delays. The impacts caused some factories to stop production lines, some stores to close and challenges in moving materials by rail.
  • When a potential for a strike by dockworkers at 36 major ports along the East Coast and Gulf Coast of the United States loomed, early warnings were sent to users on August 13, 2024, via the Countrywide Industrial Disputes indicator and sent 10 alerts between then and the second day of the strike.

Sphera SCS (formerly SupplyShift) provides unparalleled tracking of ESG-related and regulatory risks with direct visibility into every tier of a company’s supply chain. The solution empowers streamlined supplier engagement and direct performance visibility with standardized assessments, multi-tier data collection and audit-ready, quantifiable supplier data to ensure regulatory compliance and help companies build more responsible supply chains. Sphera SCS helps businesses:

  • Connect every tier of supply chain data with broader sustainability initiatives.
  • Identify, analyze and measure supplier performance to drive improvement.
  • Operationalize compliance and sustainability goals by integrating industry-specific supplier data with enterprise systems, including the collection of direct Scope 3 data.
  • Ensure legislative compliance through robust tracking, auditing and validation processes.

Naved Siddique, Sphera’s chief product officer, said, “With increased regulatory pressure coupled with a host of hidden risks in the supply chain, companies need to be empowered to proactively mitigate risk and build resilient, sustainable supply chains. This is what we deliver with our Supply Chain Transparency solution. Supply Chain Sustainability provides deeper visibility into multiple tiers of the supply chain and enables seamless collection of supplier environmental, human rights and other sustainability data, while Supply Chain Risk Management provides AI-powered insights for early risk detection and real-time monitoring throughout a supply network. This provides businesses with unparalleled risk visibility, proactive risk management, sustainability integration and regulatory compliance.”

The evaluation was also based on a two-hour, live brief and product demonstration, vendor responses to 109 questions and customer interviews.

According to the report, “Sphera offers a robust decarbonization prioritization analytics, providing simple, toggle-driving scenario planning and impact visualization.” The report also noted, “Sphera offers a uniquely granular carbon footprinting capability, offering not only regional and building level data but asset-level and product-level data as well.”

“Carbon management is becoming a non-negotiable for global companies, and Sphera provides the comprehensive set of tools needed for setting targets, identifying hotspots, reducing emissions, accurate reporting and regulatory compliance,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “We believe the IDC MarketScape report on Carbon Accounting and Management reinforces Sphera’s unique value proposition of leveraging integrated sustainability solutions designed for measurable, actionable and auditable ESG reporting. We are proud to be recognized as a Leader for our carbon management capabilities and look forward to continuing to support companies of all sizes and in every industry in their efforts to be more sustainable across the entire enterprise value chain.”

“As more organizations work to decarbonize operations, capabilities such as analytics, quality datasets and customer engagement capabilities are vital features in carbon accounting and management technologies,” added Amy Cravens, research manager of ESG reporting & management software at IDC. “Our 2024 IDC MarketScape Carbon Management report highlights Sphera’s unique offerings in supply chain and decarbonization management. Sphera’s Near-Term Science-Based Emissions Reduction Target Receives SBTi Validation https://sphera.com/company/news/spheras-near-term-science-based-emissions-reduction-target-receives-sbti-validation/ Mon, 29 Apr 2024 08:49:07 +0000 https://sphera2023.wpenginepowered.com/?p=16247

SBTi validation underscores Sphera’s commitment to global decarbonization and minimizing its own environmental impact

CHICAGO, IL (April 29, 2024) – Sphera®, a leading global provider of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, has received validation of its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) reduction target from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), in line with a 1.5°C trajectory.

The target applies to Sphera’s direct operations, with a commitment to reduce its absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 60.5% by 2030 using 2019 as the base year. In 2019, Sphera’s GHG footprint equaled 8,582 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. As outlined in Sphera’s most recent ESG Report, total GHG emissions have already been reduced by 19%.

“In order to be successful in today’s business environment, organizations must be action-oriented in developing and improving the sustainability of their operations and services,” said Sphera’s CEO and President Paul Marushka. “As such, we are not only committed to supporting our customers in achieving their emissions reduction targets but also to minimizing our own carbon footprint. We are proud of the SBTi approval of our near-term, science-based emissions reduction target, and it demonstrates Sphera’s ongoing dedication to creating a safer, more sustainable and productive world.”

As part of today’s announcement and Sphera’s dedication to global decarbonization, the firm also commits:
  • To reducing absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions from fuel and energy-related activities, waste generated in operations and employee commuting by 46.2% from our 2019 baseline by 2030.
  • That 60.7% of its suppliers by emissions covering purchased goods and services and business travel will have science-based targets by 2028.

This validation from the SBTi is a crucial step in the transition to a zero-carbon economy. As part of the firm’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, Sphera reports its emissions in line with requirements outlined by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. Additionally, Sphera reports in reference to the standards of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) and the U.N. Global Compact (UNGC) and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The accolade underscores how SpheraCloud Integrated Sustainability enables organizations to navigate the complex data collection, assessment and reporting responsibility for Scopes 1, 2 and 3

With increased regulatory, investor and consumer pressures, transparency is paramount to the success of sustainability objectives. The rapidly evolving regulatory environment globally is especially challenging for companies, and businesses need to be able to stay on top of regulatory updates and manage compliance data across the enterprise. The SpheraCloud Integrated Sustainability platform goes beyond simple data collection and calculations, providing the tools that unlock supply chain transparency, drive meaningful sustainability progress and build stakeholder trust while managing compliance and regulatory reporting.

One judge commented that “data collection, analysis and integrity are central to Sphera’s whole proposition, and here it does not compromise.” Another judge added, “By automating data collection and analysis, companies can make informed decisions more swiftly, improving responsiveness to market dynamics and regulatory requirements. This agility is crucial in today’s fast-paced business environment, where efficiency and adaptability are key drivers of success.”

“We are honored to be recognized with a Top Product of the Year award from Environment + Energy Leader for our solution that provides an integrated approach to sustainability management,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “As businesses work to achieve their sustainability goals and compliance with ever-changing regulatory requirements around the world, many struggle to connect disparate data throughout their organizations and their Scope 3 value chains. SpheraCloud Integrated Sustainability facilitates collaboration between executive leadership in various departments, including sustainability, product, supply chain and finance and allows stakeholders to leverage multiple, complementary data sources. This enables organizations to gain a complete picture of their emissions and efficiently produce measurable, actionable and auditable results across Scopes 1, 2 and 3.”

Scope 3 emissions are those that come from a company’s value chain. SpheraCloud Integrated Sustainability enables buyers and suppliers to collect data for Scope 3 emissions reporting and identify potential ESG risks. Sphera offers the only solution that provides access to the most comprehensive industry-based, annually updated life cycle assessment (LCA) database verified by DEKRA. Additionally, Sphera’s Managed LCA Content database allows access to third-party databases. With the solution, companies are able to quantify the environmental footprint of product portfolios in a fraction of the time it takes to conduct LCAs product by product.

Sphera’s new Scope 3 Survey Report underscores importance of quality emissions data in climate-related reporting https://sphera.com/company/news/spheras-new-scope-3-survey-report-underscores-importance-of-quality-emissions-data-in-climate-related-reporting/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 07:33:15 +0000 https://sphera2023.wpenginepowered.com/?p=9131

Sphera’s latest report examines the challenges and best practices for measuring and disclosing Scope 3 emissions in sustainability and ESG reporting.

CHICAGO, IL (April 9, 2024) – Disclosure of corporate value chain emissions, also known as Scope 3 emissions, is increasingly required for sustainability reporting for companies in multiple jurisdictions, according to the 2024 Scope 3 Report from Sphera, a leading global provider of ESG performance and risk management software, data and consulting services.

The new report examines the challenges associated with Scope 3 assessment and reporting and identifies best practices for managing emissions reporting and data management. Its findings are based on Sphera’s Scope 3 survey. Of the 43% of survey respondents whose companies disclose greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), over half (52%) disclose their emissions across all Scopes (Scope 1-3). Another one-third (30%) of survey participants indicated that their company plans to report on Scope 3 in the future.

“Executive leadership teams who are preparing for Scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions reporting will outpace their peers in terms of addressing sustainability and staying ahead of stakeholder demands,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “Organizations need a combination of software solutions, data and expertise to build a successful Scope 3 reporting practice, which is increasingly in demand. An integrated approach to sustainability management provides businesses with a holistic view, which is especially helpful in complex realms such as Scope 3 emissions data collection and reporting. It also fosters collaboration with suppliers and enables data collection and transparency throughout the value chain — which is crucial in ensuring accurate Scope 3 reporting.”

The State of ESG and Sustainability Reporting

The current and upcoming international ESG reporting regulatory landscape is placing more demands on companies to assess, improve and disclose sustainability performance. According to 46% of survey respondents, their company is required to comply with current or upcoming ESG and sustainability regulations. However, differences in regulation requirements across the United States, European Union and the globe can complicate reporting for companies operating in multiple jurisdictions.

Regardless of regulations, 49% of respondents indicated they voluntarily submit sustainability and ESG reports. Even small businesses are beginning to address GHG emissions, with 26% of small businesses surveyed reporting they are doing so, albeit at the Scope 1 and 2 levels.

Quality data is the most important aspect of accurate, credible and effective sustainability reporting. Inaccuracies in data — and consequently, inaccuracies in reporting — can lead to breaches in customer trust and penalties from regulatory bodies. For companies required to report and others that voluntarily report, spend-based data alone is no longer sufficient. Instead, multiple, complementary data sources can be leveraged to create a complete picture of an organization’s emissions.

The Importance and Challenges of Scope 3 Reporting

As the traditional focus of corporate reporting, Scopes 1 and 2 have a more mature data foundation for their measurement and assessment in comparison to Scope 3. Because Scope 3 emissions occur outside of a company’s own operations across its value chain, lack of direct control or ownership of Scope 3 emissions is challenging for businesses looking to collect internal and external data, ensure data quality and consistency, access life cycle emission factors and calculate performance with confidence. In addition, noncompliance with Scope 3 reporting comes with penalties and problems including financial risks, reputational damage and pressure from stakeholders.

Scope 3 emissions can account for the majority of a company’s carbon footprint. Therefore, assessing and reducing Scope 3 emissions — even with its inherent challenges — plays a foundational role in a science-based decarbonization strategy. And it requires collaboration from multiple departments, including product, supply chain, finance and sustainability departments.

For companies looking to build a successful Scope 3 reporting practice that integrates efforts across the organization and produces measurable, actionable and auditable results, an integrated sustainability solution helps executive teams operationalize their programs to drive meaningful sustainability performance improvement. Learn more about how Sphera can help organizations navigate this complex data collection, assessment and reporting responsibility for Scopes 1-3 at www.sphera.com

Report Methodology

The findings in the 2024 Scope 3 Report are based on Sphera’s Scope 3 survey, which was conducted globally among sustainability professionals in 2023. The survey received responses from 262 professionals, who provided insights into the complexity of Scope 3 measurement and reporting.

Sphera’s inaugural report demonstrates the data-based insights that help empower companies to protect their businesses from ever-evolving risks and build resilient, agile and sustainable supply chains

CHICAGO, IL (March 5, 2024) – While supply chain impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic moved into the rearview mirror in 2023, data in Sphera’s inaugural Supply Chain Risk Report shows that supply chains were vulnerable to a broad range of other risks — inflation and rising interest rates, natural hazard events and ESG-related risks such as human rights violations and labor practices among them.

With its new report, Sphera®, a leading global provider of ESG performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, aims to provide insights into the risks that impacted supply chains in 2023 — as well as their causes and consequences. The report is based on data from Sphera’s Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) software, which provides actionable insights into a multitude of potential disrupters so companies can proactively manage and mitigate supply chain risk.

“Sphera’s Supply Chain Risk Report shows that a broad range of risks, increasing ESG regulations and compliance failures can stress businesses,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “Risk exposure is dynamic, and constantly evolving supply chain risks cause ever-increasing market volatility. By optimizing the supply chain composition and diversifying suppliers, companies can better manage the uncertainty that comes with supply chain disruptions. To do this, organizations need a solution that provides actionable insights for proactive risk monitoring that enables them to get ahead of disruptive events. Staying ahead of supply chain risk helps businesses reduce potential costs associated with such risk, gain competitive advantage and build transparent, agile supply chains.”

Financial-related challenges stress the supply chain
Data in the report shows that more than one-third (36%) of the financial risk notifications warned of worsening revenue and growth outlook. High inflation rates in the EU and U.S. eroded suppliers’ purchasing power, with insolvency under self-administration going up 23% and bankruptcies increasing 42%. Additionally, site relocations or closures increased by 26%. Financial distress does not happen overnight, and awareness of finance-related risks is strategically important to helping companies withstand economic fluctuations and uncertainties and build resilience.

Extreme weather events are on the rise
The report shows that natural hazard events hit supply chains hard in 2023 with warnings for tornadoes climbing by 45%hailstorm warnings increasing by 26% and tropical cyclone warnings going up by 6%Two-thirds of the global economy is affected directly or indirectly by weather conditions with industries such as agriculture, energy and transportation particularly affected. A solution that provides 24/7 monitoring and advanced notifications of weather risks can help companies prepare their supply chains and get ahead of an impending disruption — and help minimize the financial impact on the business.

ESG-related risks remain prominent
Data also shows that ESG-related risks in supply chains continued to rise in 2023, with indicator messages for the entire category of ESG-related risks rising 6% in volume. Human rights notifications increased 12%, labor practice issues rose 13% and ESG-related issues related to violations of environmental practices went up 1%. Increased globalization, regulatory changes and consumer and investor demands can all contribute to the greater prominence of ESG risk in supply chains. A holistic approach to supply chain risk management that integrates ESG considerations into the strategy can help companies mitigate the consequences of ESG-related risk.

Report Methodology
Sphera’s award-winning Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) software was the data source for this report. The AI-powered Risk Intelligence component of Sphera SCRM scans on a monthly basis more than 15 billion reputable news articles, commercial and government data sources and 1 million customer and supplier sites around the world. These feeds provide Sphera with the most highly representative supply chain risk insights on the market and allow Sphera’s technology to identify potential risks or worsening trends and notify customers of such threats. For the report, Sphera compared the number and types of indicator messages sent from January through November 2023 with the datapoints from the same period in 2022.

Sphera’s best-in-class sustainability performance management software empowers companies like Suntory Beverage & Food Europe to establish transparent, audit-proof sustainability data and reporting

CHICAGO and LONDON (January 16, 2024) – Sphera®, a leading global provider of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and risk management software, data and consulting services, today announced that its SpheraCloud Corporate Sustainability software has been selected by Suntory Beverage & Food Europe (SBFE), producers of iconic soft drink brands Orangina, Lucozade, Schweppes and Oasis*, to support their sustainability efforts on the journey to net zero.

SBFE’s Growing for Good value inspires the company to grow their business sustainably as they work toward being net zero by 2050. A few key sustainability priorities on that journey include reducing added sugar in their drinks by 35% by 2025; making their plastic packaging 100% sustainable by 2030; using 20% less water by 2030; reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50% by 2030; and reducing Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030.

SpheraCloud Corporate Sustainability software is a market-leading solution for comprehensive ESG reporting and advanced performance management. Automated data collection, powerful reporting tools, advanced planning features and extensive emission factor libraries enable enterprises to rapidly and reliably understand the environmental impacts of their business and meet regulatory requirements. Advanced performance analytics help companies understand gaps between targets and actual performance, improve sustainability and reduce operational expenses. Additionally, SpheraCloud Corporate Sustainability simplifies reporting for all relevant standards and frameworks (such as CSRD, GRI, CDP, SASB and TCFD), ESG ratings agencies (such as MSCI and DJSI) and existing and emerging regulations (such as SEC and European Commission).

Some key areas in which SpheraCloud Corporate Sustainability will support SBFE’s sustainability efforts are:

  • Calculation of Scope 3 emissions — specifically for categories 1 (raw goods), 9 (transportation) and 11 (packaged goods) — in support of SBFE’s Scope 3 emissions reduction target of 30% by 2030, as well as helping to provide more accurate and streamlined reporting generally, including for integration of supplier data.
  • Visualization of progress against sustainability goals, as well as simulations of future activity to support decision-making and investment decisions.
  • Building capability and robust reporting frameworks for non-financial disclosure requirements, and bespoke dashboards to support colleagues and customers across Europe.

“Sphera helps businesses take measurable, proactive steps in their sustainability journeys, and we’re proud that Suntory Beverage & Food Europe has entrusted Sphera to help them achieve ambitious sustainability goals,” said Paul Marushka, Sphera’s CEO and president. “SpheraCloud Corporate Sustainability provides insights based on transparent, actionable and auditable data to help improve corporate sustainability performance as a foundation for a sound net-zero strategy. Empowering businesses to make data-based decisions to set, measure and achieve sustainability and ESG goals is critical to our mission of creating a safer, more sustainable and productive world.”

“Partnering with Sphera supports our transition to be a more sustainable business by enabling us to track, monitor and visualize our sustainability progress,” said Michelle Norman, SBFE director of sustainability and external affairs. “Suntory Beverage & Food Europe is committed to Growing for Good, and that means investing in industry-leading sustainability data management tools and robust ESG disclosure software to support our future goals, while giving our teams the capacity to be more efficient and effective.”
